Stepping out for new record

YOUNG safety campaigners joined hands and put their best foot forward for a world record breaking attempt last week.

Pupils at Rudheath Primary School teamed up with others across the country to form a simultaneous world record breaking ‘walking bus’.

The giant crocodile of 275 children aged four to 11 took to the streets of the village at 10am on Friday, June 19 to promote a 20mph speed limit around schools.

Secretary Kath Shaw said the rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the intrepid adventurers.

“We all had a great time,” she said. “The children thought it was great fun, it was really exciting for them and they even enjoyed the rain.

“But as well as having fun, they also learned about road safety and why the speed limits should be lowered in their area.”

The day was the latest initiative of road safety charity Brake, and saw more than 100,000 pupils from across the country walk in crocodiles of twos on a 500m safe route around their school.

Every 20 minutes a child is hurt or killed on foot in the UK, most on the way to or from school, so the charity aims to educate children and parents about the dangers of speeding and the benefits of walking.

The children received a free sticker and certificate for their efforts along with a road safety newspaper full of games and quizzes.

They are still waiting to find out if they are the new world record holders.
