‘I know best’ Do you remember those words? Didn’t you hear them again and again when you were growing up? Some of us certainly did.

Maybe it was a ‘know-it-all dad’ or an overbearing mum. The problem is that, looking back, they usually did know best, even though it still pains my human pride to admit it.

It takes humility to realise that in life we are often confronted by people who know better than we do. I’m told by local builders that they often work in homes where they meet people who know better than they do – but usually the builder knows best.

I’m told by doctors that they often welcome patients who spend the limited consulting time (eight minutes) telling them what is wrong with them and what treatment they think they need – but usually the doctor knows best.

Jesus Christ knows best when it comes to understanding God.

Firstly, he is God the Son. Fully God in human flesh.

Secondly, he comes from God the Father to make the Father known.

John chapter one says: “No one has ever seen God, but God the one and only, who is at the Father’s side has made Him known.”

Don’t you think that the builder secretly shakes his head in despair when the homeowner thinks that he knows best.

Don’t you think that the doctor secretly shakes his head when the patient thinks he knows best?

Don’t you think that God shakes his head when we think that we can guess what he is like without looking at Jesus?

Surely you are interested in what God is like?

Look at Jesus and listen to him through the New Testament, eye witness accounts of his life.
