THE musical director of a Northwich choir is retiring – 36 years after he formed the group.
Cliff Peartree, who was head of Sir John Deane’s Grammar School and sixth form founded the Rivendell Singers in 1972.

Cliff, 72, of Westbrook Road, Kingsley, said: “I thought there was a gap in the musical life in Northwich for a small choir.”
He was musical director of the choir, which performs around the Vale Royal area, for 12 years until 1986 and then returned for another stint in 1999.
At a retirement dinner held at The Mill Pool restaurant, Cliff was presented with an inscribed cut glass crystal comport, a cheque and a photograph of the choir taken at his final concert at Hoylake.
His wife Gill was presented with a water bouquet in recognition of her time with the choir.
Cliff said: “It is time for a change and a few new ideas from somebody else.”
Barry Storey, chairman of the choir, said: “He is a gentleman and a man of the highest order.
“We would like to thank him for all his hard work and dedication over the years.”
Also retiring on the night was musical accompanist Janice Bartai.
Jan, who was head of music at The Queens School in Chester was with the choir for six years and has left to concentrate on teaching music.
She was presented with a water bouquet and a cheque.
