PETROL thefts are on the increase in Middlewich because of rising fuel costs.

Police are warning residents to make sure their registration plates are fixed firmly to their vehicles as thieves target cars to help them steal fuel.

PC Mike Senior, from Middlewich CAT team, said: "There are more drive-offs because petrol prices have gone up, which is increasing the amount of low level crime - about £20 to £80 worth of fuel a time.

"But people aren't daft and will alter number plates or clone plates.

"It is difficult to get plates made though so they will steal them from vehicles - so check your plates are secured."
