A MIDDLEWICH headteacher has reached the finals of a prestigious teaching award.

Keith Powell from St Mary's Catholic Primary School had a big shock when he found out he was a finalist in The NCSL Award for the headteacher of the year in a primary school.

Mr Powell 43, who has been at the school for 13 years was surprised to say the least when the school governors nominated him for the coveted award.

He said: "I was just doing my job, which I feel very passionate about. I believe that every child has a gift and it is our job to bring that out whatever it may be.

"It is about giving children a balanced education. Our faith is also very important in this school."

The awards have been running for 10 years and are being held on June 19 at ACC Liverpool, Monarch Quay.

Caroline Evans, chief executive of the teaching awards, said: "The influence of these outstanding individuals on the lives of children and their families cannot be underestimated. Society needs to recognise their contribution and that teaching is a fulfiling career.

"The teaching awards are a way to say thank you and we are proud to recognise such excellence and passion."

Mr Powell will be accompanied to the event by a few of his supporters including the chair of governors.

Gemma Ellison, a member of the school governors who nominated Keith, said: "Keith engages the complete commitment of all people involved within the school in his role as headteacher.

"He has the support of his family and the support of the whole school in all that he does."
