Actions speak louder than words for caring Delamere Academy pupil Sophie Carr.

The Year 6 pupil wanted to express her support for best friend Ava Venables, who lost her father to cancer when she was seven-years-old.

Now she has had her lovely long hair cut short, so she can donate the ponytail to The Little Princess Trust which provides free wigs to young people struck by the disease.

Sophie, 10, explained: “I have wanted to do it for a long time. I know it was a big shock for Ava to lose her dad. I decided that I wanted to help her, and realised that I could help other people too.

“So I’m donating my hair to the Little Princess Trust, and raising money for them, and St Luke’s Hospice, through a Just Giving appeal.”

Ava’s dad, David, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in July 2015, and sadly passed away four months later when she was aged just seven.

It was days before Ava’s birthday, which David had planned to spend with her, her sister Mia, now 13, and wife Tara.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs for children and young people, aged up to 24, who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

St Luke’s Hospice, in Winsford, offers care and support to local people affected by life-threatening conditions.

Ava said: “I want to say a big thank you to Sophie. It was really brave of her, I didn’t actually think she’d do it so I was really surprised when she turned up at school with short hair!”

A Just Giving page has been set up as ‘Sophie’s Sponsored Hair Cut’, with funds going to the two charities. Link:
