A PHOTOGRAPHER’S pet project is capturing the attention of animal lovers with stunning portraits of our furry friends.

Jack Makin, from Davenham, recently launched Shutter Paws and is taking a walk on the wild side as he snaps animals in their favourite places.

Apart from Jack and his camera, everything changes from shoot to shoot, from subject and location to the types of photos produced.

“There is no set routine of doing it,” Jack said. “It’s completely different every time and it’s fun to do.

“My sister got a puppy and I started taking pictures, and my mum and dad have a couple of dogs as well. The photos came out really well, so I researched the market and thought I would go for it.

“It’s really taken off, and that has also led to some opportunities to do other things.

“From doing shoots with a dog owner, they have put me in touch with people who needed work doing and have recommended me, so I have some commercial stuff coming up as well.”

Shutter Paws is currently offering packages, where a series of pictures over the course of a year might show the story of a puppy growing up, as well as single shoots.

It’s the latest turn in Jack’s burgeoning photographic career. He caught the eye earlier this year when, less than a year after buying his first camera, he received praised from a National Geographic expert for his work with landscapes.

He said: “I am still doing the landscapes but more for myself.

“I am not really pursuing that as a career at the moment because it’s so difficult to make full-time work out of it.

“My aim at the moment is to eventually take Shutter Paws full-time.”

While shoots so far have included a variety of much-loved pets, man’s best friend takes the biscuit.

Jack said: “It has been mostly dogs, and they are just wild – especially if they are younger or not as well trained.

“I try to do it outside because it’s more interesting and they dog is happier.

“Especially if it’s somewhere they know, they will just run around like a mad man. You just put the fastest shutter speed and take as many as you can.

“I am looking at setting up some equipment to have a studio indoors for the winter months and do something a bit different.

“Pet shoots in the UK are very traditional, and I want to do things a bit differently.”
