A 12-YEAR-OLD boy was awarded a framed certificate and 15 shillings after saving the life of a girl, 3.

The girl had fallen into the River Dane, when ‘brave’ Benjamin Goodall, from Middlewich, waded in to rescue her.

As he was receiving the award, it was also revealed that Benjamin had saved another child from a Middlewich canal the previous July, and had also assisted in another River Dane rescue.

Mr Whitehead of the Urban Tribunal told Benjamin’s parents they should be ‘exceedingly proud’ of their son, who was a ‘credit to them’.

MORE than 3,000 people flocked to the Northwich swimming baths during July 1918, figures revealed.

Takings from the baths amounted to £48, five shillings and seven pence.

50 years ago

MOTORISTS were warned against using a public footpath frequented by families as a ‘speedway’.

A special meeting of Hartford Parish Council heard how drivers and motorcyclists were speeding along the path, a popular walkway for mothers and children.

While some were using it to access the Vale Royal Club grounds, others were using it as shortcut to Whitegate.

The matter was put before the Mid Cheshire Road Safety Officer.

TWO puppies found locked in a yard behind the Guardian office in Witton Street were reunited with their owner.

Staff found the pups hungry and cold in the yard, and published a story in a bid to find the owner.

An RSPCA inspector said it was likely the dogs were stolen from Greenbank and dropped in Northwich.
