TREVOR Rawling, described by a former chairman as the backbone of Northwich Rugby Club during his tenure, died last week at the age of 70.

His connection to the Moss Farm outfit spanned three decades as a member and official, including a spell as vice-chairman.

“Sports clubs thrive because of people like him,” said Sam Naylor.

“And many across the country are facing big challenges because there are fewer with the dedication that Trevor had.”

Rawling was Naylor’s understudy on the executive committee for more than 10 years, and also served as secretary and chairman of Blacks’ mini and juniors section.

He was a regular spectator at first-team games after standing down from those roles.

Naylor said: “Trevor was a close personal friend and I came to rely on him when I was chairman.

“He organised single-handedly the logistics of our trip to Twickenham to play in the RFU Senior Vase final back in 2007 and was an important figure in many projects that helped the club to develop.

“It wasn’t just the big strategic stuff though; he’d be one of the guys putting out the pitch-side advertising boards before a game too.”

The club shared the news of Rawling’s death in a short statement issued last Wednesday.

“It is with extreme sadness that we announce that Trevor has passed away after a brief illness,” it read.

“He was a committed rugby man and a thoroughly decent bloke.”

Martin Poste, director of rugby at Northwich since 2015, shared his own impression of the former official.

He said: “In the short time I knew Trevor he came across as a true rugby man with the right values who offered to me the hand of friendship when I came here.”

Away from rugby, Rawling was the chair of governors at Sir John Deane’s College in Northwich until earlier this year.

He joined the board in 1999.

“Trevor was known and loved by so many here and in the wider community,” read a tribute from the college.

“He was an active and committed governor, and we have benefitted hugely from his experience, support and devotion to the role.

“We will remember him for his drive, professionalism, kindness and generosity.”

Northwich Rugby Club have confirmed that their former secretary’s funeral will take place on Monday, from 2.30pm, at Vale Royal Crematorium on Shurlach Lane in Davenham.

They have invited mourners to wear a black shirt and club tie.

Afterwards a celebration of Rawling’s life continues at the club’s home.
