A look back at the stories making the headlines 100, 50 and 25 years ago

100 YEARS AGO: THERE was disruption within the Cheshire Executive of the National Farmers’ Union.

Disputes raged over the age of conscription for ‘indispensable’ workers, while milk prices were also a bone of contention.

The union called the proposed summer milk prices ‘absurd’, noting that there had been increases elsewhere in the north west and that – if they were not echoed in Cheshire – the 3,000 members would look to stop the supply.

50 YEARS AGO:

IT seems that it is never too late to find love, as the Guardian reports on the wedding of a couple in their seventies.

Amy Bosley, 70, from Winsford and Edward Oakes, 76, from Holmes Chapel were married in Lostock Gralam Parish Church and came to the Guardian to share the happy news of finding love in their golden years.

Amy said: “I never imagined that I would become a wife again after all these years. It just goes to show it is never too late.”

Edward added: “I have known Amy for 40 years and I’m happy to now be settling down together in a home of our own.”

The couple met through their mutual background in farming and now look forward to living together on Bradford Farm, in Rudheath.

25 YEARS AGO:

VANDAL’S ruined a Weaverham couple’s return from holiday in what was described as a ‘vicious and targeted attack’.

Pensioners Richard and Doreen Whitehead, both 68, arrived home from the Canary Islands to find acid had been poured through the front door of their home whilst out of the country, as well as thrown about on garden plants.

Their niece Carole discovered the carnage at the house and informed the couple.

She said: “Whoever did this must have been watching the house to make sure nobody was home. I just don’t understand why someone would do this.”

Police made enquires around Keeper’s Lane, where the Whitehead’s had lived since the 1940’s, and called this a vicious and targeted attack on members of the community.
