YOUNG chemists from Sir John Deane’s College have been awarded silver and bronze awards in a national chemistry competition.

The Chemistry Olympiad is the leading chemistry competition for students in secondary education across the UK.

Students Joshua Appleton, Chloe Todd, Alex Naylor and Alexander Smith achieved silver awards, while Victoria Turner, Eleanor Sykes, Katie-Marie Bennett and Ben Mayoh bagged bronze.

Laurence Potts, chemistry teacher, said: “The Cambridge Olympiad stretches students significantly beyond the syllabus and requires them to apply their knowledge to university level problems. It was a very challenging paper, so they should be proud of their achievement.”

Run annually by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Olympiad is an opportunity to challenge chemistry students, helping them to develop problem solving skills and apply familiar knowledge in new and interesting contexts.

The competition is made up of three stages, starting with the Round one exam paper and ending with four students representing UK at the prestigious 50th International Chemistry Olympiad hosted in Bratislava, Slovakia and in Prague, Czech Republic.
