A POSTMAN from Weaverham is hoping to give a 'life changing' opportunity to someone with diabetes.

Jonny Amery, began an appeal before Christmas in an effort to raise money towards an Animas Vibe insulin pump, which costs £5,000, after his wife Vicki was given the pump by the NHS.

He is currently in training to run the London Marathon on April 22 for Diabetes UK, which includes up to up to 70 miles a week on his postal deliveries around Northwich and evening training currently of up to 24 miles.

He said: "Although I have run half marathons in the past this is my first marathon and I am currently on a 16-week training session leading up to it in London.

"I am supporting the charity as in the last 18 months Vicki has changed her life through the support from Diabetes UK, she has been type 1 diabetic since the age of seven, and had been on four injections a day to control her sugar levels.

"This was never successful and she would have sugar level spikes as high as 18 and as low as two, with average levels of 14, which meant she was constantly battling every day."

Jonny found out about the insulin pump after meeting an old school friend for a coffee and after Vicki spoke to staff at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Jonny explains: "Since that day in May 2016, Vicki has completely changed her life, she is now not suffering from lows and spikes in her blood sugar.

"This has given her a new lease of life and she has been able to become more active and completed her first 5K race, several Parkruns, and recently completed a Gung-Ho obstacle course. This may seem like a small achievement for a normal person, but for Vicki this has been a long and very difficult journey. "

Jonny said he had had an incredible response to his fundraising efforts including raffle prizes from various Northwich businesses including TG Builders and from his employer Royal Mail who have donated £400 bring his total to almost £1,300.
