A MOTORCYCLE club in Middlewich has ‘embraced the 21st century’ after voting in an all-female committee.

Kings MCC has been running for more than 25 years, with a membership made up predominantly of men.

But at the group’s annual meeting on Wednesday, January 10, members voted five women into the club’s top roles.

Jan Varty, chairman of Kings MCC, told the Guardian that the club is hoping to change the perception of bikers.

“Motorcycle clubs have had a bad reputation because people just think that we are all Hell’s Angels,” she said.

“But really we are all in our 40s and 50s, many of us have grown up children, we have social lives and we aren’t out causing trouble.

“I have been riding since I was 18, but we have members who are new to motorcycling, and anyone with an interest in bikes is welcome to join us.”

Joining Jan at the top table are treasurer Linda Cooper, secretary Karen Dakin, vice chairman Carole Griffiths and Lesley Radford, committee member.

She admits people ‘can be surprised’ when they see a woman on a motorbike, but believes the appointment of an all-female committee has come at the right time.

Jan said: “What always makes me laugh is when you pull up alongside someone, and they expect to see a bloke, but they realise it’s a woman and they are shocked.

“But it is the 21st century, and I think we are really starting to bend those rules.”

Kings MCC is welcoming new members to the club, which meets at the Boars Head, in Kinderton Street, on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.
