A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD from Winnington walked an incredible 16 miles with his dog to raise hundreds of pounds for St Luke’s Hospice.

George Margeson and labrador Ted completed the trek, along with George’s dad Rick and grandfather Andy, in seven hours.

The Winnington Park Primary School pupil has so far raised more than £650 – smashing his original fundraising target of £300.

“I am so happy I got more than my £300 target and can help poorly people at St Luke’s Hospice,” George said.

“The walk was very long, I was very tired but am really proud of myself.”

The trekkers set off on their walk at 8am on Sunday, January 7, and took in Northwich Flashes, Anderton Nature Reserve and Marbury Country Park.

They received support along the way from other walkers and in response to the updates they posted on Facebook.

“Both my wife, Megan, and I have never been prouder of George,” said Rick.

“He decided he wanted to raise money for such a worthy charity on his own, decided how far he would walk and helped set up his fundraising charity web page. Most of all we are proud that he completed the walk with a big smile on his face.

“To complete such a selfless task at such a young age and be so aware of how he can help others and the contribution he can make is truly amazing.”

George decided he wanted to fundraise for the hospice after St Luke’s staff visited the youngsters at Winnington Park.

They gave a talk to years three and four about the hospice, the vital services it offers to the community, and the need to raise money to ensure those services can continue.

Mandy Shaw, a fundraiser at St Luke’s, added: “George is an absolute inspiration. What he has achieved for someone so young is just amazing.

“He had a simple idea to raise money for the hospice and he got his whole family involved.

“He has raised a staggering amount of money for St Luke’s and we are so very grateful for his support. I’m sure his family and school are incredibly proud of him.”
