EDDISBURY MP Antoinette Sandbach is urging constituents to look after the elderly over the festive period.

In her Guardian column this month, Antoinette said:

"With the festive season in full swing, it is time to look forward to seeing friends and family over Christmas. It is also an opportunity to come together as a community at this special time of the year. As such, it is right that we consider the more vulnerable in our society and ensure we are as inclusive as possible. No one should feel isolated or alone at Christmas.

"I encourage local residents to look out for elderly neighbours over the coming weeks. Loneliness is a serious issue and we must do all we can to help those facing a Christmas without being surrounded by friends and family. This is not only important for the most vulnerable in undergoing daily tasks, but for general company. A little effort from us all can go a long way for older people.

"Since being elected in 2015, I have always prioritised supporting older people in Eddisbury. Whether it’s meeting with local charities such as Age UK or championing closer community ties, I see it as one of my key responsibilities as an MP. I welcome measures such as the triple lock on state pensions aimed at making sure older people can live a fulfilling and comfortable retirement. As a community though, we should look out for an elderly neighbour at Christmas time and beyond.

"One way that older people can tackle loneliness and meet new people is through the extremely worthwhile initiative, Brightlife. The county-wide project, which works with local agencies, has in a short space of time provided invaluable support to many in Cheshire. More widely, I commend all in the voluntary and community sector locally for their work. So often volunteers work extremely hard with little praise or congratulations. It serves to demonstrate our wonderful community spirit in Winsford and the surrounding areas."
