POLICE have reopened the M6 southbound between junctions 18 and 17 after clearing an overturned lorry.

Officers first closed two lanes of the stretch between Holmes Chapel and Sandbach at 9.40 when the lorry had overturned in the roadworks.

Highways England then closed the full carriageway an hour later to clear the lorry from the road.

Drivers have been facing delays of around 90 minutes on the southbound side, stretching to junction 19 for Knutsford.

At 5.18pm, a spokesman for North West Motorway Police said: "M6 southbound carriageway now open.

"Traffic will take some time to clear, please continue to be patient."

Highways England had to repair barrier damage and treat the road surface with sand, before sweeping the carriageway.
