AN 'exceptional' Crewe student has been celebrated during a joint collaboration Salford and Manchester universities.

Eve Stockton, aged 17, from Crewe claimed this year’s 'Top Student of the Course' award at Salford and Manchester’s Chemistry Residential Development Week.

Eve completed her AS programme in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Psychology last year and is currently working towards her A2 qualifications at the South Cheshire College.

She was encouraged to apply for the chemistry residential course by her tutor. Places were capped at 40, therefore only a limited number of students were accepted.

Neil Hewitt, Eve’s Chemistry tutor at South Cheshire College, said: “I helped Eve to collate the information for the application, but she did all the hard work.

“We were both delighted when she gained a placement and subsequently made a name for herself, excelling to gain the ‘Top Student’ award; a great achievement.

“We are really proud of her. Eve recorded the highest score of the year in both Chemistry and Psychology, as well attaining top grades in her other subjects. She is exceptional.”

The four-day chemistry programme was part of a larger collaboration with Salford and Manchester Universities named 'Greater Manchester Higher’, which provides a learning, and rewarding experience for students.

It allows them to thrive by taking part in interactive activities and meeting new people. Lab activities, workshops, development opportunities, socials and facility tours are all part of the camp, with a student crowned ‘Top Student’ to round off the week.

Eve said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, it was fantastic to be part of the course.

“Everyone I met during the residential was extremely friendly, particularly the university tutors and student mentors.

“The laboratory work was really interesting, and it was great to use the specialist equipment at the university.”

Eve is currently studying for my A2 qualifications and will be applying for Veterinary Medicine at university.

She said: “I’ve always wanted to study Veterinary Medicine, so it’s been an exciting opportunity to experience university life as well as meet new people from different colleges.

“I am looking at various options after I’ve qualified, but the research labs at Manchester University and Salford University were brilliant, so it will definitely be a consideration.”
