BOROUGH chiefs are being criticised for erecting new speed limit signs which encourage drivers to speed up to 60mph for just a few metres.

After a stretch of Runcorn Road, in Little Leigh, was reduced from the national speed limit to 50mph earlier this year, new signs were put in place to alert drivers to the new speed limit.

These include signs in Shutley Lane – one of the main routes between the A533 and the village centre.

For drivers entering Shutley Lane, the signs tell drivers to slow down from 50mph to 60mph – only for them to enter a 30mph zone just metres away.

In the other direction, drivers are told there is a 60mph speed limit before slowing down for a busy junction with Runcorn Road.

Ian Smith, from Little Leigh, believes the signs are ‘ridiculous’ and should be taken down.

“It is a stupid situation where drivers are told to go to 60mph, and it could be quite dangerous,” he told the Guardian.

“Quite a few people have complained about it. I sent a letter to the parish council but I am yet to hear back from them. It reminds me of a scene from Monty Python. It’s absolutely stupid.”
