THINKING about buying your first home?

According to a new site, it may prove rather difficult if you're not earning more than the minimum wage.

We took a look at postcodes in Crewe, Northwich, Winsford, Middlewich, Knutsford and Wilmslow and found CW1 in Crewe was the cheapest postcode to buy a property with buyers required to earn £10.20 an hour or £19,890 a year. 

According to figures published by, one of the most expensive postcodes in the area is Knutsford where buyers have to earn £28.94 an hour or £56,433 a year.

CW1 - Crewe, Haslington, Leighton - £10.20 per hour, £19,890 a year

CW2 - Crewe, Wistaston, Woolstanwood - £12.65 per hour, £24,667.50 a year

CW3 - Crewe, Madeley, Betley, Woore, Audlem - £18.48 an hour, £36,036 a year

CW4 - Holmes Chapel, Goostrey, Cranage - £22.59 per hour, £44,050.50

CW5 -  Nantwich, Willaston, Sound - £17.27 an hour, £33,676.50 a year

CW6 - Winsford west - £26.11 an hour, £50,914.50 a year

CW7 - Winsford (Town), Wharton, Over, Glebe Green, Darnhall, Stanthorne, Bostock, Wimboldsley - £11.53 an hour, £22,483.50 a year

CW8 - Northwich, Hartford, Weaverham, Castle, Greenbank - £16.65 an hour, £32,467.50

CW9 - Northwich, Wincham, Lostock Gralam, Rudheath, Leftwich, Davenham, Kingsmead, Antrobus - £14.24 an hour, £27,768 a year

CW10 - Middlewich, Winsford East - £12.67 an hour, £24,706.50 a year

SK9 - Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Handforth, Styal - £28.34 an hour, £55,263 a year

WA16 - Knutsford - £28.94 an hour or £56,433 a year

The most affordable postcode in the country was in Middlesbrough where buyers only have to earn £2.15 an hour while the top 10 most expensive were all in London ranging from earnings of £143.97 an hour up to £186.66 per hour.

The figures are based on a single person working a 37.5 hour week and spending 35% of their income on mortgage repayments - the amount the Shelter charity defines as affordable - and take into account average house prices in an area, assuming a 20 per cent deposit and a 25-year fixed rate mortgage at 2.63 per cent interest.
