A COACH trip to 'the plague village' will set off from Hartford next month.

The coach trip will set off to Eyam Hall at 9.15am on Wednesday, September 27.

The village is noted for an outbreak of bubonic plague, which occurred there in 1665.

Villagers chose to isolate themselves rather than let the infection spread.

Its economy now relies on the tourist trade and it is promoted as 'the plague village'.

As in most National Trust properties, volunteer guides will be on duty around the Hall to answer any questions you may have.

Pat Hatfield, from Hartford Civic Society, said: “In the afternoon you may choose to visit the stables, which have been converted into individual craft shops and then join a Guided Tour of the historic village, hear stories of the plague years, see the cottages where so many villagers died and visit the church, which has a fascinating exhibition of the plague years.”

The cost of the visit is £12. Lunch is not included. Entry to Eyam Hall is free for National Trust members.

Members of Hartford Civic Society can obtain a free one-day pass.
