TESCO is ‘reviewing’ its recycling facilities at its Northwich superstore due to persistent fly-tipping

On Wednesday, a picture was shared on social media that showed a significant number of items had been dumped by the store’s recycling bins.

Tesco said it regularly clears the site to tackle the fly-tipping issue, but revealed it is becoming ‘increasingly challenging’.

The Guardian understands that Tesco is now reviewing whether it can continue to maintain the facilities.

Thomas Richardson, Tesco Northwich Superstore manager, said: “We’re always working hard to be a good neighbour in Northwich and we provide these recycling facilities for the benefit of the local community.

“We make sure they’re cleared regularly as fly tipping has become a problem.

“It’s a shame that they’re being abused in this way and we’re having to review whether we can continue to maintain them.”

The waste has since been removed.

Darren Carter, 44, from Castle is the person who took the photo on Wednesday.

The taxi driver said: “It’s been a problem now for a while but it seems to be getting worse.”

He said the problem has been 'exacerbated' by the recent reduction to opening times at Northwich tip.

He said: “People need to stop being lazy and take responsibility as residents and citizens of Northwich.

“I have seen bits there before but that is just getting beyond a joke. It is too much. It’s also a health hazard.”

Mr Carter said more needs to be done to catch the offenders.

He said: “More importantly they need to be catching the people who are doing it. It is a prime Northwich location right buy the train station.

“It doesn’t look good for Northwich. We’ve got people like the Hut Group expanding massively in Northwich.

“It’s going to put people off. We’re struggling as it is with the town centre becoming empty, Barons Quay doesn’t seem to be getting filled with anything.

“People looking to bring their business into Northwich or somebody looking to move, it’s going to put them off."

A Tesco spokesman urged the community to use the recycling facilities responsibly.
