A MUCH-LOVED headteacher who has worked at Lostock Gralam C of E Primary School for 33 years is retiring this summer.

Gill Barker has taught generations of Lostock youngsters in that time, while she has served as headteacher for the past seven years.

To mark her long career, pupils past and present joined in with a week of celebrations to say thank you to Mrs Barker.

"It's been wonderful to see so many of my old pupils coming back to see me," she told the Guardian.

"Children who were here years ago and two generations of the same families, with parents and children who I've both taught, have wished me well which is lovely.

"It's been like a second home to me – such a big part of my life – and I will miss everything about it."

For her farewell, Mrs Barker was treated thrown a surprise party last week, and has been 'showered with gifts' from her colleagues and pupils.

Youngsters also made a host of emotional performances to thank their headteacher at a church service on Monday, before a garden party in the afternoon, while pupils also put together a picture book with photographs from Mrs Barker's time at the school.

"It's the children that have made all the memories," she said.

"Each class that I've taught has brought something different, and there have been special visits and activities each year.

"And I will miss my wonderful colleagues, who have done their best for me and will continue to do so for the children."

Mrs Barker commissioned an artwork for the school as a parting gift, and now the Nantwich resident is looking forward to putting her feet up.

"I'm hoping to spend more time with the family – and more time in the garden," she said.

Sheila Plant, deputy headteacher, added: "During Mrs Barker's time as headteacher the school has really gone from strength to strength.

"Everyone will miss her – it will be a huge hole that she leaves behind."
