A KINGSMEAD figure skater has qualified for the grand final of a national competition.

Ella Forbes, a St Nicholas Catholic High School pupil, won the children’s group category at the Altrincham heat of the 2017 Artistic Figure Skating Competition on Saturday, July 15.

Ella and her team mates the Whizz Kids, aged between 11 and 16, performed a routine to Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ and ‘Crazy in Love’ dressed as grannies.

Skaters competed in their home rink and after being awarded a perfect score of 90 out of 90 Ella and the Whizz Kids will compete at the grand final in Coventry Arena.

Lisa Forbes, Ella’s mum, said: “It was a fantastic weekend for the Altrincham Synchro Club members who were ‘off their rockers’ dressed as grannies.

“The last time I saw a perfect score was Torvil and Dean at the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics.”

Their routine was choreographed by skating coach Sam Ozard.

The competition was designed to allow skaters to show their artistic and performance skills. Judging was based on costumes, props, music interpretation, entertainment value and skating skills.

It took place across all Planet Ice and Silverblades ice arenas.

The victory finishes a fantastic season for Ella and the Whizz Kids who have picked up two gold medals and three silver international synchronised skating medals.

Ella’s season starts again on Monday, November 5 with the Lee Valley Synchronised Skating Competition.

Her training continues on and off the ice throughout the summer.
