A WEAVERHAM drama student has been crowned the Manchester Slam youth champion.

Conrad Clenton, 13, from Greenroom Drama Academy in Weaverham, beat five performers in the final of the Monologue Slam UK round in Manchester.

Conrad’s scathing assessment of the handling of Brexit wowed judges of the national competition, which is a showcase for actors off all backgrounds, and saw him crowned champion in the 11 to 17 category.

The Weaverham High School pupil’s piece was called Kidology, and focused on the current political state of the UK.

Beverley Green, Conrad's teacher from Greenroom Drama Academy, said: “It was about laughing at adults and what a mess they’ve made with Brexit, and about how kids aren’t allowed to vote.

“He said, it’s been one year and you’re still arguing. It took me am Kyle two weeks to sort out our Pokémon cards and that’s a much bigger job.

“He was saying adults, you think you know it all but I’m here to tell you, you don’t. Brexit, what’s all that about? You’ve made a right mess of that haven’t you?

“He said you think you know stress? How many of you have been close to catching a Pikachu only for him to go in a puff of smoke. That’s real stress.”

Fellow Greenroom Drama Academy student Poppy Crouchley, 11, also made it to the final in the 11 to 17 category.

She performed a monologue about burning her the science lab at school.

Sophie Beales, 13, also delivered a monologue after being selected as a wildcard on the night.

Beverley helped write all of her students’ monologues, and said she was ‘close to tears’ when Conrad won.

Beverley said: “I was just delighted. He deserved to win, he stood out above them all.

“It was fantastic to see that he could take a piece that I wrote and deliver it so well.

“I was chuffed to bits, I was nearly close to tears.”

Beverley, who is involved in organising the competition, said she was ‘immensely proud’ of all her students.

She said she was approached by a number of casting agents on the night.

Classes at the Greenroom Drama Academy run at the Weaverham Community Centre on Wednesday evening. Classes are for five to 18 years old.
