CAKE and cookie-loving staff and students snapped up mouth-watering treats to boost vital funds for the Brain Tumour Charity.

Cake sale organiser Deborah Murphy was hoping to raise about £60, but the hundreds of treats on offer brought in more than double her target.

The fundraiser was held at Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College, where Deborah is a receptionist.

Deborah is a long-time friend of former Sir John Deane’s student Louise Smith, and decided to organise the sale to support Louise’s fundraising for the Brain Tumour Charity.

Louise, 43, from Davenham, raised more than £7,000 for the charity in April by climbing the Eiffel Tower with her husband Mike and daughter Amelie just months after undergoing 25 hours of surgery for a brain tumour.

The amazing total was boosted subsequently by £4,000 raised by Mike and his work colleagues from Laser Quantum when they took part in the Great Manchester Run.

Louise supported the cake sale by making dozens of Rocky Road cakes and cookies, which she brought along to the fundraiser, which was held in the ‘Street’, the main corridor which runs the length of the college.

“The students made cakes for the sale, and there were hundreds of cakes and biscuits,” said Deborah.

“The students and staff spent lots of money, we had a Galaxy chocolate display and sold raffle tickets.

“A number of people just donated and didn’t buy cakes, which was nice that they wanted to donate anyway.

“Because the college is in the exam period, the upper sixth form have almost all gone and the lower sixth are deep in exams, I thought that £60 may be a good sum to raise.

“The fact that we made £132 is amazing, and I am so thrilled with the all the hard work of the students.

“They were going from classroom to classroom and promoting the cause.

“They kept coming up to the desk to give me updates, so I’m very happy that we surpassed my original estimate.

“Louise called in the morning, with cakes and T-shirts, and met with some of the students - I was so thrilled to see her and to have her support.”

Deborah thanked Jane Rapuano, Katie Murray and the Charities Committee.

Louise thanked Deborah and the college for supporting the charity, and said the money would help to fund research and support patients and their families.
