GEORGE Hyde set a new competition record as Mid Cheshire athletes excelled during the Cheshire Schools’ Track and Field Championships.

The Weaverham High School student, who represented England as a reward for winning a national title last year, took gold in the inter boys’ shot with a put of 16.49m.

Classmate Daniel Berg also improved on a previous best for the event when he won the inter boys’ hammer title with a throw of 49.12m.

His feat was matched at Macclesfield by Grange School student Evie Tipping in the junior girls’ hammer, which she won with a distance of 44.29m.

All three are in the frame to represent the county at the English Schools’ National Championships in Gateshead next month.

In the junior boys’ category, Luke Chambers (St Nicholas RC High School) was a comfortable victor over 800m.

County High School Leftwich student Jack Garner claimed the 80m hurdles title in the same age category, while Charlie Bancroft (Weaverham) won the shot.

Jack England, from the same school, ranked highest in the hammer.

Grange School student Cameron Duff, who won a sprint double at the club championships last month, added an inter boys’ 200m victory to his collection in 22.6s – a national standard time.

Mid Cheshire athletes dominated the middle-distance races in the same age group, with Ben Lee (Grange), John Humphries (St Nicholas) and Alex Doyle (Middlewich) winning over 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m respectively.

Joe Williams, of Grange School, won the 100m hurdles and Weaverham’s Will Rattray the discus.

It was a good day for girls too.

Simar Hare (Grange) was best in the junior girls’ long jump, while Meg Evans – also of Grange – won the javelin ahead of Leftwich student Megan Henshall.

Abbey Brown (St Nicholas) claimed first prize in the discus.

Sprinter Mia Lowndes, from Leftwich, followed a heat success with victory in the inter girls’ 100m final.

Winsford Academy’s Amy Brough edged Ellie Williams (Leftwich) by a slender nine centimetre margin in the inter girls’ shot.

Most of those newly-crowned champions have another chance to impress county selectors when they represent Cheshire at the Mason Trophy meet in Birmingham on Saturday.
