MARK Wakefield admits he has surprised even himself after emerging as a contender to win this year’s MINI Challenge.

The teenager from Northwich occupies fourth place in the drivers’ standings after an impressing showing in the series’ third round at Snetterton over the weekend.

That included a third podium finish of the campaign when he crossed the line in second spot in Sunday’s finale.

“I had an aim in mind, but I never thought I’d be anywhere near it at this stage,” said the Weaverham-based racer.

“I’m made up; the standard is high, but it’s looking promising in terms of fighting for the championship.”

He could be forgiven for fearing the worst after only setting the 15th fastest time during a rain-hit qualifying session at the Norfolk circuit – home to his team Excelr8 Motorsport – on Saturday.

However the 19-year-old recovered, finishing seventh in the meeting’s first race later on.

A first attempt to start a second sprint on Sunday had to be aborted when the cars of Steve King and Will Neal tangled shortly after leaving the line.

After the restart, Wakefield joined a queue of cars behind Eurotech duo Brett and Jeff Smith at the front of the field.

He took advantage of a mistake by teammate Max Bladon to snatch fourth in the closing stages.

When Bladon went sideways across the hairpin on the opening lap of race three, Wakefield had to take the high road around him.

That left him third, behind Brett Smith and Freddie Lee, only to gain a place when the latter retired with a steering issue.

He was trailed by Rob Smith and Jeff Smith for the remainder, prevailing in a last-lap scrap between the trio to rank second at the finish.

“I don’t mind defending – I’m used to it from my karting days,” said Wakefield.

“A lot of drivers feel the pressure when there are guys right behind them, but I know where to put the car to make it difficult to pass.”

A brace of wins for Brett Smith leaves him top of the table ahead of the fourth round at Silverstone in a fortnight.

Wakefield said: “Things have gone well for me so far, and I just need to keep picking up points.

“It’s not so much about winning, but rather making sure I’m consistent to stay there or thereabouts in the bigger picture.”
