PENSIONER Mary Douglas and Barnton Silver Band have been recognised for their services to the community.

Mary, 91, and the band were recognised for their contribution by Barnton Parish Council’s Community Awards.

The awards were presented at the annual parish meeting, at which parish council chairman Cllr Dilys Hooper stepped down, to be succeeded by Cllr Sheena Beech.

Cllr Keith Reading is to remain as parish council vice-chairman.

Community awards were presented to Mary Douglas, and Barnton Silver Band.

Certificates of appreciation for services in the community were also awarded to Barnton scouts and Barnton Community Primary School.

Grant awards were made to a number of groups.

Barnton Flower and Produce Show is to receive £300 in aid of the village show, and £500 was agreed for the Friends of Barnton Community Primary School in aid of the sensory garden.

The school is also to receive £300 towards the cost of a trip to London for pupils.

Barnton Cricket Club was awarded a grant of £200 in aid of training young cricketers, and Barnton Community Group is to receive £1,000 to support several projects to improve the village.

Other grants were awarded to Rosebank School in aid of equipment for the children and to Barnton Silver Band in aid of providing the service and teaching musicians.
