PROFESSIONAL cycling was one of the main draws when the Tour Series came to Northwich, but the community had plenty of fun earlier in the day with their own races.

A number of schools and businesses from the area had the opportunity to be in the spotlight and get out on the race track and the crowds came out in force to show their support.

The first element, which was organised by the Vale Royal School Sport Partnership (VRSSP), kicked off at 2pm as 49 cyclists and 133 runners from schools within the area took to the Tour Series circuit to get into the shoes of the professionals.

Children taking part had been specially selected for their contribution to school life.

Chris Story, Partnership Development Manager for the VRSSP, said: “The day began with a leisurely ride of the route by young people from years 5 and 6. This was a joyous moment full of whooping, cheering and a smattering of high fives.

“Following this teams of girls and boys took part in a race against the clock - so many in fact they had to be released in eight waves.

“Following some incredibly close sprint finishes the winners were confirmed as Louis Clegg from Hartford Primary School and Lorin Evans from Barnton Community Nursery and Primary School.

“A special mention must go to the children who attended not to participate but to support their peers - their support was not just reserved for their friends but extended to every young athlete. What a truly unique experience.”

Later in the afternoon it was the turn of businesses from the area who lined up for the corporate relay, looking to be crowned the champion.

A total of 14 teams battled it out with the first two teams from each of the three heats going on to progress to the hotly contested final.

The event, co-ordinated by Northwich based Weaver Valley Cycling Club on behalf of Northwich Town Council, saw crowds cheering for their favourites.

Top spot was scooped by Burdett’s Barber & Shop, second was secured by Pro Bike Kit from Gadbrook Park and third went to the Cascades bathroom team.

Northwich Town Clerk Chris Shaw took part in the relay, and said: “The schools and corporate races set the tone for a great day and it was amazing to see how many kids had turned out to support their classmates alongside their teachers.

“The corporate event was a lot of fun too, and it was pleasing to see so much community spirit on show by spectators, businesses and the organisers.

“I’d also like to thank Chris Story from VRSSP and Jim Williams from Weaver Valley Cycling Club, as without them the community elements wouldn’t have been as successful.”
