FIREFIGHTERS tackled a machinery fire for more than five hours on the third floor of a TATA Chemicals building in Northwich today.

Emergency services were called to the incident in at the chemical plant in Works lane at 8.10am this morning.

Fire engine from Northwich, Knutsford, Winsford and Middlewich were sent the scene.

Firefighters left the scene at 1.24pm, after more than 5 hours of tackling the fire.

A spokesman said: "Firefighters were called to a fire involving machinery. Two hose reel were in use and the premises was evacuated while the incident was dealt with.

“The fire was on the third floor within an industrial building which is constructed over five floors. The fire was contained to an extraction system and crews worked with on-site maintenance staff to deal with the incident.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service previously said firefighters were attending a fire involving 'machinery in a shed'.

A spokesman said this morning: “One hose reel is in use and the premises has been evacuated while the incident is being dealt with."

The fire service later confirmed the fire was at TATA Chemicals.

The spokesman said: "The fire is within an industrial building constructed over five floors.

"The fire is contained to an extraction system and two hose reels are currently in use."
