STUDENTS are planning to bake some tasty treats to raise money for a charity which is at the forefront of the fight to defeat brain cancer.

Lower sixth formers at Sir John Deane’s College are organising a cake sale to support The Brain Tumour Charity, which also supports people with brain tumours and their families.

The fundraiser is being staged by members of the college’s Student Charities Committee, which decided to raise funds for The Brain Tumour Charity after being approached by Deborah Murphy, who works at the college.

Deborah, from Barnton, asked the committee to consider supporting the organisation after being inspired by a fundraiser staged by her friend Louise Smith, a former student at the college.

Louise, from Davenham, raised more than £7,100 for The Brain Tumour Charity recently by climbing the Eiffel Tower with her husband and daughter two months after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.

“Louise has been a friend since I worked with her at LA Fitness, and we have stayed in touch over the years,” said Deborah.

After hearing about Louise’s surgery and Eiffel Tower challenge Deborah wanted to help boost Louise’s fundraising total.

“I messaged Louise and asked if there was anything I could do,” she said.

“Straight away I knew I wanted to help raising funds, and the thought of using the college came naturally. I approached the charity committee and they were happy to get involved.

“The college strongly believes in helping others, and raising funds close to students' and staffs’ hearts is usually involved.

“I have found Louise to always have a positive outlook on life, and her way of wanting to help others out of the illness she has doesn’t surprise me at all.”

Louise was a student at the college between 1990 and 1992, and is planning to make a cake for the sale to help boost the total for the charity.

She said: “I'm delighted to hear that The Brain Tumour Charity is the chosen charity for the cake sale at the college.

“It's a fun way to raise funds and raise awareness of the important work which the charity does.”

Louise's husband Mike and his colleagues at Laser Quantum hope to raise £1,500 for The Brain Tumour Charity by taking part in the Great Manchester Run.

They have raised £610 towards their target, and anyone who would like to make a donation can visit justgiving.com/fundraising/LaserQuantum2017.
