COMMUNITY-minded teenager Imogen Hooley has been praised for her efforts to help keep Lostock Gralam free of litter.

The 14-year-old from Lostock Gralam undertakes between four and five hours of litter picking in the community each week with her dad Richard.

Imogen collects litter as part of her bronze Duke of Edinburgh scheme, which she is due to complete in June.

“Imogen was initially going to look into voluntary work with a local charity,” said Richard.

“However, she could see unsightly litter around the area which looked awful.

“She feels by clearing the litter that it will deter other people from littering, and in turn make the area a better and more desirable place to live, allowing her to give something back to her community, which she is proud to live in.

“She initially allocated one hour a week for three months, but enjoys it so much, and has had such a positive response from the community, who often stop to thank her, that she often does four to five hours picking a week.”

Residents have also praised Imogen’s efforts on the Next Door phone application.

Before Imogen could start litter picking she contacted Lostock Gralam Parish Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council for permission and risk assessment.

Cheshire West supplied safety and picking equipment.

Richard added: “I am so proud of Imogen. She identified the issue, and took all the necessary steps to make her idea reality.

“I am with her when she litter picks, and the number of people who have stopped or posted positive comments on social media is truly humbling.

“She would like to thank the parish council and Cheshire West for their support, and the residents of Lostock Gralam for their kind words of support.”

Parish council chairman Mark Litton said: “Lostock Gralam Parish Council is very grateful to Imogen and would like to thank her.

“It would be nice if Lostock Gralam residents and those who pass through Lostock support her by keeping the village tidy by putting litter and dog mess bags in the bins provided.”
