NORTHWICH residents are being urged to use a telephone self-help service this winter before seeing a GP.

Vale Royal Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said residents can use the free NHS111 service, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Its phone lines are staffed by trained advisers, supported by experienced nurses and paramedics.

They will ask questions to assess any symptoms and can then give relevant healthcare advice.

If a caller does need to see a GP they can advise about the nearest surgery and contact details.

Jonathan Griffiths, chairman of NHS Vale Royal CCG and Swanlow Practice in Winsford, said: “It can be very worrying when you, or a family member, need healthcare advice but are not sure which NHS service to turn to for support. Fortunately, help is at hand from NHS111.

“At NHS111 a trained advisor can assess what’s wrong and give you advice about what to do next, there and then over the phone.

“There is no need to make an appointment with NHS111 and they are of call for fast, professional information.

"If you are not sure if you need a doctor’s but want medical advice fast, then call NHS111 day or night for your direct line to the NHS.”

Pharmacies also offer help and advice on a whole range of common illnesses such as coughs and colds.

There is no need for an appointment and many are open late and at weekends.

All the pharmacies in the area also offer private consultation rooms.
