A FAMILY is appealing to Guardian readers to see if they can help find a medal that was awarded to a First World War soldier.

Janette Lister, from Stockport, is hoping readers recognise the medal - awarded posthumously to Sergeant Harry Jones - following his death in the Great War.

The medal is known as the Widows Penny.

"Unfortunately it was somehow lost from the place that was storing it and it has become separated from the family," she said.

"We found it for sale at Northwich Auction House in September 2015.

"Investigations have found that it never sold but the auction house could not give out seller details and now the auction house has closed.

"We desperately want to bring this medal back to the family where it belongs.

"The family are happy to pay for its return."

Northwich Auction House on Runcorn Road, Barnton, is now an antiques shop.

Janette added: "The medal itself is known as a Widows Penny or death penny, given to the family of those who died in service.

"Harry was in this case considered lost a sea. The medals themselves are fairly common and have little monetary value."
