A GASTROPUB in rural Northwich that has been plagued with trouble in recent times has shut up shop once again.

The Duke of Portland, in Lach Dennis, closed earlier this month.

The pub is owned by Marston’s Brewery, which lease the pub out to tenants.

A Marston’s spokesman said: “We are currently recruiting for new tenants, ensuring we can get the pub open again as soon as possible.”

It is the second time in under two years the pub has been forced to close.

The Duke of Portland announced its shock closure in May 2015 on social media, stating that it was 'with deep regret' and thanking customers for their support.

The closure left customers shocked and saddened and put 20 people out of work.

It was reopened in November the same year by Mark Huntley, who has worked in hotels and pubs in Cheshire for the past nine years.

Mark left the pub in May 2016 and has seen it change hands numerous times since.

Mr Huntley said: “I got out in May. I got out while I still could. It was a right mess. It’s had three or four different owners since then.”
