A DAVENHAM Scout troop is in need of new leaders in order to continue offering the service to children in the village.

The 1st Davenham Scout troop is in danger of folding as its long-term leaders prepare to retire, with a takeover yet to be arranged.

With the troop’s future in danger, they are appealing for new leaders to come forward and help keep the resilient group running.

After their former home in Church Lane flooded and was condemned in 2009, the Scout group – which has been running for 85 years – has been battling to stay alive.

Organiser Jayne Wilbraham said: “The leaders that are there have been there for years, and have love it, but they are coming to the time when they are ready to move on and retire.

“We had a meeting last night and they confirmed that they want to have someone new in place by the summer but no one has come forward.

“Our scout hall was flooded and the Beavers and Cubs were rehomed at Davenham Primary School and Moulton Adventure Group, but the Scouts go up to a farm [in Bostock].

“They have worked really hard to keep it going. If there aren’t any new leaders, the Scouts will fold and there will be nothing for the younger groups to move into.

“It’s another extra activity for the children in the village, it’s brilliant for camping and leads onto Duke of Edinburgh qualifications.”

Jayne says the group will be putting out appeals through the school and council newsletter.
