ASDA's £15 million Barons Quay superstore has officially been opened.

The talented City of Chester Brass Band played a selection of Christmas carols to get shoppers in the mood for the festive season during Monday’s grand opening.

Graham Evans, MP for Weaver Vale, and salt art competition winner, Lailah Assad, 7, were on-hand to celebrate the opening by cutting the ribbon to the new store.

Mr Evans said: “I was thrilled to join budding young artist Lailah to officially open the doors to Asda Barons Quay on Monday.

“The investment put in to Barons Quay and Northwich by Asda has helped 130 Northwich residents secure jobs as part of the in-store team – this is great news for Northwich.”

Lailah, from St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, showed off her artistic flair to create the winning picture of St. Helen Witton Church out of paint and salt.

Anne Weir, head teacher at St. Wilfrid’s, said: “We were very proud to hear that Lailah won the art competition and she was thrilled to be given such an important job of cutting the ribbon.

“It was a pleasure to bring Lailah and her friends to help open the store this morning. We’ve all had a great time.

“We’d like to say thanks to the Asda Barons Quay team for the Christmas party goodies for Lailah and her class to celebrate the festive season early.”

The 28,000 sq. ft. store includes a large fresh food and produce department, bakery, Café, rotisserie and popcorn machine and an extensive George clothing and Home range.

Shoppers can also take advantage of an in-store click and collect service. A petrol station will also open on the site.

Katie Coburn, general store manager, said: “We are so excited to be finally opening our doors to the public after months of hard work behind the scenes by our colleagues.

“The opening morning was a huge success and we’d like to say a huge thank you to both Graham and Lailah for helping us launch the store and the wonderful City of Chester Brass Band not to mention everyone from the community who got involved with the celebration.”
