MUM Gemma Kelso is appealing to the community for support to enable her to create a downstairs bedroom and bathroom for her son Cieran.

Cieran, 11, was struck down with meningoccocal septicaemia a week after he started walking, and had both legs amputated.

He still faces major surgery reconstructing damaged bones in his legs and arms, and replacing adult teeth which never formed.

He is due to undergo reconstructive surgery on his right leg at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, but is due to be back at home for Christmas.

Cieran lives in Rudheath, and is a pupil at St Nicholas Catholic High School in Northwich.

He has prosthetic legs and uses a wheelchair, and shares a first floor bedroom with his three-year-old brother Gabriel.

His parents Gemma and Gary are hoping to extend their Weaver Vale home to create a ground floor bedroom and wet room for Cieran, and have £30,000 towards the scheme in the form of a Disabled Facilities Grant.

However that leaves them £9,362 short of the money needed to create the bedroom, and they are hoping the public will rally round to help.

Northwich residents supported the family when they needed to raise £8,000 for prosthetic legs for Cieran, the money being found from donations and the proceeds of a Midnight Walk organised by Gemma.

Gabriel has cystic fibrosis, and the family has raised thousands of pounds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Meningitis Now.

“With Cieran and Gabriel's extensive needs and constant trips to hospitals for both boys life is tough going,” said Gemma.

“Cieran and Gabriel have shared a bedroom for the last three years, but we are at a stage where it is not feasible.

“Gabriel requires physio and medication through the night, he is a restless sleeper which affects Cieran’s sleep, and in turn affects his behaviour the following day.

“We require space in Gabriel’s room for a physio table and storage of medications.

“We are reaching out to the public to see if they would be willing to help us again.”
