ONE of Northwich's busiest roundabouts has been transformed as part of a multi-million pound scheme.

The roundabout, which is being constructed by AE Yates on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Council, links Chesterway, Leicester Street, New Warrington Road and Station Road.

With work nearing completion, the Guardian decided to roadtest the new roundabout.

Embarking on the journey just after 1pm, we made it around the new triangle-shaped island in around one-minute.

Work on the roundabout began in February and is set to last until September.

The scheme has been financed with £3.4 million government pinch point funding to increase the size of the roundabout to cope with future traffic and provide pedestrian crossing facilities.

Plans for the roundabout were first announced in 2013 but were axed in December 2014 while an alternative idea was considered.

Cheshire West and Chester Council said this alternative layout would not be viable due to cost and technical issues.

The council went back to the drawing board and amended its original plans.
