VOLUNTEERS have been telling Community Pride judges about their efforts to improve village life.

Wincham is hoping to score success for the second year in a row after being highly commended in last year’s competition.

The village was entered in the contest by Wincham Parish Council for the first time for a number of years, and achieved success in the Community Spirit section of the awards.

The council has entered the village in the 2016 competition, which is organised by Cheshire Community Action and sponsored by Essar Oil UK.

Kathy Benn and Lisa Gordon from Cheshire Community Action visited Wincham on Monday to assess the village as one of the shortlisted villages for this year’s awards.

“Volunteers from the village explained their wide variety of contributions to improving village life,” said parish council chairman Cllr Ian Parr.

“The work done by those attending ranged from planting to painting to protesting against the building of waste plants.

“Work done by volunteers who could not be present was also reported to the judges, who were impressed by the written submission from Wincham.

“Over the last few years things have improved a lot in the village, and we have a good team of people doing things.”

The photograph shows the judges with some of the volunteers at a stone feeding or water trough which has been given to the village by an anonymous donor.

The trough has been installed at Rayners Corner, and planted up with flowers by Brenda Yates, Annie Makepeace and Sue Lawson.

The trough is next to a signpost which has been repainted by volunteers from the village.
