ONE of Britain’s most iconic aircrafts is set to fly over a village fete next month in a dramatic highlight to the community celebrations.

The Spitfire is associated with the Battle of Britain, one of the defining moments in The Second World War, when the RAF defeated the Luftwaffe.

The organisers of the 2016 Comberbach Fete have scored a major coup by gaining the agreement of the RAF for a Spitfire to perform a fly-by at the fete on Saturday, June 25.

“The theme for the day is Comberbach Rio Carnival, so we are expecting lots of vibrant colour and excitement,” said fete committee secretary Jim Powlson.

“Another special attraction for this year is a Spitfire fly-by, which has been agreed with the RAF, subject to service requirements.

“We thought it would be of great interest to local people, and it promises to be dramatic and fascinating.

“The fly-by has caused a stir on social media, and has grabbed people’s attention, and several Second World War prints signed by the pilot will be auctioned on fete day.”

The Spitfire which is due to fly over the fete will be in transit from the south west to the north east.

Rose Queen elect Rebecca Foster will be crowned at the fete, and has chosen to raise money for Fibromyalgia Action UK.

Each year the fete committee organises the Comberbach Village Fun Run at Marbury Park, and Rebecca helped to promote the event and raise sponsorship, as well as taking part.

The proceeds from the event, including sponsorship money, is donated to the Rose Queen’s charity, which has a special meaning for Rebecca, 10, whose nan Helen McIntosh has fibromyalgia.

Rebecca also arranged a silent auction of a pair of executive Liverpool FC match day tickets and a cake sale at Comberbach Primary School to boost her fundraising.

Her efforts raised about £1,100 for Fibromyalgia Action UK, which is due to be presented to the charity on fete day.

The fete starts with a village parade starting from Senna Lane at 1.30pm, which completes a route through the village, arriving at Comberbach Primary School field, where the main event starts at 2pm.

Rebecca is to be crowned at about 2.30pm, and the fly-by is due to take place just before 3pm.

The fete will feature singer Liv Queenie, a display by Hartford Gymnastics, jazz band No Room for Parachutes and the Bostock Band.

There will be entertainment for the whole family, including fairground rides, stalls, games, fancy dress, a show ring, barbecue, bouncy castle, magic shows and exotic animals from Sam’s Scales and Tails.

There is an entry fee of £2 per adults, and under 16s are admitted free with a supervising adult.
