SCARECROWS based on Despicable Me and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe caught the eye of the judges in a village competition.

The creations were among the winners of a community event which Wincham Parish Council decided to reintroduce across the village this spring.

The theme of the scarecrow competition was film and television, and the event attracted nine entries from residents and a business.

The competition consisted of a scarecrow trail, and in the run-up to the trail, Cllrs Debs May and Sarah Henshall ran a scarecrow-making workshop at Wincham Community Centre, which was well attended by children and their parents and grandparents.

The workshop was a hit with the children, who learned how to create papier mache and to stuff scarecrows.

The scarecrow trail ran for a week, between Saturday, April 30 and Friday, May 6. Trail maps and voting forms were available via the parish council or online.

U-lock It Self Storage, which has a centre in Wincham, won the category for the funniest scarecrow with its Humpty Dumpty entry.

The ‘most work’ category was won by the Hurst family with its entry based on The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, and Tracy Oultram won the ‘most inventive’ category with her ‘We’re gonna need a bigger boat’ entry.

Jo Robinson won the category for the most colourful entry with her scarecrow inspired by the film Despicable Me.

The winners were presented with a medal at last Wednesday’s Wincham Parish Council meeting by Cllr Henshall.

“On behalf of Wincham Parish Council, we would like to thank all our entrants, who put in a lot of thought and time into their entries,” said Cllr Henshall, who is to serve as vice-chairman of the council for the next 12 months after being elected at last Wednesday’s meeting.

“It was fabulous to see residents walking around the village enjoying the displays, and we look forward to running another scarecrow trail next year.

“All the monies raised by the trail will go to youth projects in the village.”

Cllr Ian Parr was elected at the meeting to serve as chairman of the council.
