PRIMARY school children raised hundreds of pounds to support their young friends in Kenya.

The pupils at Victoria Road Primary and Nursery School held a Mango Madness fun day to raise money for the Northwich-based charity Under the Mango Tree.

The charity supports the Kambe Timboni school in Kenya, which is situated in a poor rural area 30 miles north of Mombasa, the country’s second-larghest city.

The sponsored activity afternoon raised £220, which will be used to improve classrooms at the Kenyan school.

Year six Victoria Road pupils Kristen Wojtala and Paris Bassett presented a cheque to charity trustee Gordon Atkinson.

The Kenyan school’s initial aim was to raise £6,000 to build a new classroom, which has been completed and the school has also funded the building of a staff work room.

Kenyan parents and children are so keen for education that numbers have expanded beyond the school’s capacity, and further classrooms are needed.

The school aimed to raise £4,000 by March to help create an extra classroom and a new toilet block, and is looking further ahead to raise £35,000 for a building to meet short and medium-term classroom needs.
