PRIMARY school children are seeking support for a club which would teach exercise and nutrition and encourage interest in sport.

The Young PTA at St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School is hoping to raise £2,500 for a Kids Fit Club at the school.

The money is being raised through the Crowdscrum website, and the deadline for donations to the appeal is the end of May.

The Young PTA applied to launch the fundraising campaign, and is being supported by the school’s Parent Teachers Friends Association.

The Kids Fit Club would be held after school, and would teach children exercise, nutrition, relaxation, team sports to boost their overall fitness, health and increase their interest in sport.

This would be supplemented with sessions from visiting instructors in sports such as golf, archery, tennis, yoga, martial arts and archery.

PTFA trustee Samantha Newey, who helps to run the Young PTA, said the fundraising appeal had been launched in keeping with national agendas to offer better opportunities for young pupils, linked to obesity and healthy eating issues.

“The aim is to fund and launch a sustainable Kids Fit Club, and the applicant in the fundraising campaign is the children themselves,” said Samantha.

“St Wilfrid’s has a unique Young PTA, which comprises a third of the pupils, half of who take part in monthly meetings.

“The Young PTA invites guests to meetings who can teach them something new about the world of work or to develop themselves further.”

Samantha and Amanda Johnson, who is chairman of the PTFA and helps run the Young PTA, are taking part in a marathon charity cycle ride in November from Cambodia to Vietnam.

They will be raising money for Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action by taking part in the Action for Charity event – Women V Cancer Cycle Vietnam to Cambodia, and will be cycling for 450 kilometres.

The Young PTA is planning to undertake its own local cycle ride to acknowledge the importance of exercise in their lives and the achievement of Samantha and Amanda.
