DAVENHAM Post Office could be on the move in a proposal to modernise and increase the service.

The Post Office plans to move the branch, currently at 477 - 479 London Road, 53 metres away to the Spar and BP garage, at 485 London Road.

It says this is to create a modern open-plan branch with extended opening hours and is asking residents for their views in a six-week public consultation.

Suzanne Richardson, Post Office regional manager, said: "We understand how important having a Post Office is to the residents in Davenham and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

"This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office."

The new Davenham branch would offer Post Office products and services from two open plan service points integrated into the retail counter instead of from a screened counter.

If the move goes ahead the branch would open from 6am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 9pm on Sunday, which is 56-and-a-half hours a week more than are currently offered.

The proposal is part of a major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed to make it easier for customers to do business.

The Post Office is inviting comments and feedback on the proposal and any issues customers would like to be considered before a final decision is made.

Submissions can be made by Freepost to Your Comments, Post Office Ltd, by emailing comments@postoffice.co.uk, by ringing the customer helpline on 03457 223344 or textphone 03457 223355.

A questionnaire is also available at postofficeviews.co.uk with the branch code 195401.

The consultation ends on May 17.
