BARNTON Community Nursery and Primary School’s science week events have been hailed “an awesome success” by headteacher Annette Williams.

“During Science Week this year, the school’s aim was to showcase ‘all things science’ we do at school, provide lifelong memories for everyone and celebrate all of the children’s hard work,” said Mrs Williams.

“Across the school, there were plenty of cross-curricular lessons linked to science, and the children enjoyed many exciting opportunities and experiences.

“This ranged from watching the live launch to Mars, waiting for the school’s chicks to hatch, sharing whole school science homework projects and class experiments with families during a whole school science celebration assembly, to an Awe and Wonder assembly led by Fun Science, Cheshire, followed by an unforgettable science open evening.”

Many year six pupils supported the evening with a series of experiments and demonstrations.

There was an opportunity to try out the Van de Graff Generator and a candy floss machine, and experiments in the sound, forces and biology rooms were among the most popular activities.

The school invited families to bring in their pets, and attracted a tortoise, yellow-bellied turtles, rats, a chameleon, lizard and guinea pigs.

Mrs Williams added: “We’re so lucky to have the most amazing staff team and the most supportive community - thank you to all involved in making this event such an awesome success.

Emma Boyd, science lead, said: “We are so pleased by the number of families who came along and supported this extraordinary event. Such a buzz of excitement around the school was truly a delight to see.”

The week also included an array of workshops across the school including forensic science, chemistry, the digestive system and African animals, and a visit from The Astronomical Society, which provided telescopes which allowed the children to see as far as Jupiter and the International Space Station.

The science evening was praised by parents on the school’s Twitter page, with comments including ‘a fantastic evening for all ages,’ ‘Thank you team Barnton for an amazing evening of science’ and ‘Amazing science evening - so much to see and do.’
