A YOUNG swimmer from Kingsmead has raised more than £200 with a two-mile challenge.

Abbie Unsworth completed her swim in one hour and 17 minutes.

The 11-year-old, a member of Northwich Centurians, decided she wanted to take on a personal challenge to raise money for Sport Relief.

Her mum Carol said: "We've done the Sports Relief walk before as a family, but she was adamant that she wanted to do something on her own, and something that would challenge her.

"Swimming is her passion, so she decided to attempt a two mile swim.

"The problem with doing this many lengths is making sure that no one gets in your way."

Abbie, who is in Year Six at Kingsmead Primary School, carried out her swim at Sir John Deane's Leisure Centre, where staff advised her on the quietest times to swim and also offered to rope off a lane for her if it got busy.

She started the challenge at 6pm on Sunday, March 13, and completed it at 7.17pm, cheered on by her family.

Carol said: "Abbie swims for Northwich Centurions, so we knew she was capable of the distance, but it's a long time to be in the water and boredom and cramp can set it."

She added: "Abbie is absolutely thrilled with herself.

"She was so nervous just beforehand, that she almost pulled out.

"She is very glad she didn't now."
