A QUICK-thinking five-year-old saved the day by phoning his Winsford dad to ‘wake up mummy’ after she collapsed while putting him to bed.

Kate Pitcher had been putting her two children to bed at their home in Berkeley Close, Warrington, on Monday, February 15 when she suddenly collapsed on five-year-old Finlay Pitcher’s bed.

The brave Daresbury Primary School pupil quickly phoned his dad, who lives in Winsford, and looked after his two-year-old sister Nancy until help arrived.

Graham Pitcher, 36, phoned his ex-wife Gemma Briggs, who also lives on Berkeley Close, and her and husband Mike Briggs came to Finlay’s aid.

Graham said: “Finlay rang me at about 7.15pm and just said he couldn’t wake mummy up and I needed to come over.

“There was no fear in his voice – he just said ‘daddy I need you, mummy can’t wake up’.

“I arrived just as it turned up and Kate was upstairs flat out – Finlay was shouting ‘wake up mummy’ and looking after Nancy.

“The ambulance people were saying how brave he was – they asked him to do things for them and he reacted and did it for them.

“He’s was very brave and he’s only five so you don’t expect that – he’s a superstar and he’s had a few treats since.”

Graham also had kind words for Gemma and Mike – who came to his ex-wife’s aid while still in his pyjamas.

“They dropped everything for us and took Nancy and Finlay back to the house and looked after them,” Graham said.

Kate’s collapse is thought to have been caused by an infection, and after a short spell in Warrington Hospital she is now back to full health.

Kate, 36, said: “I’m very proud of him without a doubt – if he hadn’t have done what he’d done god knows what would have happened.

“I’d put Nancy to bed and put Finlay’s bed cover on the bed – that’s the last thing I remember before the ambulance came.

“Finlay was very brave – I didn’t know he’d do a thing like that because you don’t really expect it.

“He goes to sleep really quickly as well so if I’d collapsed 10 minutes later he would have been asleep – as soon as his head hits the pillow he’s normally straight asleep so it was lucky.”
