SPEEDING drivers will be urged to slow down on a Kingsmead road with the help of an interactive sign.

Kingmead Parish Council has agreed to buy a Speed Indication Device (SID) for Monarch Drive, to remind drivers of the 20mph limit.

Cllr Laura Hoey, parish council chairman, said: "I think it's a good idea because when you come off the spine road you're doing 40mph and it's quite a big reduction in speed from 40 to 20mph."

Cllr Helen Weltman, a Kingsmead parish councillor and also Davenham and Moulton ward member for Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC), said £5,000 is available from the Section 106 developers' contribution for the Anderton Place extra care development.

This needs to be used for highway work in the vicinity of the development.

A SID would cost £5,000, which includes 10 years of maintenance.

The decision follows a meeting Cllr Chris Reed had with CWAC's highways team in January about speeding in the village and what measures could be put in to reduce it.

"There's no chance of any sort of physical calming measures being implemented," he said.

"In a lot of residential areas they've had so many complaints about the noise it introduces that they're taking away speed bumps and raised areas, so we wouldn't stand a chance of getting anything like that."

Cllr Reed said that the issue of 20mph limits not being enforced by police also came up and CWAC's highways team said they would look into this.

Cllr Mike Channon said residents also needed to take responsibility for keeping to the speed limit.

"The majority of speeding is done by residents," he said.

"The perception is that everyone comes on the estate and tears around, same as the perception is that youths come in from Leftwich.

"It's down to the community to decide whether to address it or not."
