WARRINGTON Rowing Club enjoyed national success on Saturday as Lucy Glover and Ellie Davies stormed to an under 19s title in Nottingham.

The 16-year-olds saw off older competition in the Senior British Rowing Championships at the National Water Sports Centre to win gold in the doubles at under 19s level.

The Warrington pair also placed 15th of 52 overall in the senior race.

They were followed home by a second Warrington crew, with 17-year-olds Pippa Curran and Lucy Stanhope coming in third in the under 19s and 22nd overall.

“Lucy and Ellie won the nationals in the under 16s earlier this year, so to jump to under 19s level is quite an achievement,” said vice-chairman and junior coach Richard Sinnott.

“Under 19s is not usually a level that races, so this competition bridges the gap between junior and senior.

“I would’ve been happy had they come in the bottom six in the senior competition, so to have beaten that many senior crews was very pleasing.”

Sunday saw a quad of Glover, Davies, Stanhope and Ayesha Wooler, replaced by Rachel Oslav-Harris for the final rounds due to illness, come fourth in the under 19s race and 18th overall.

The weekend’s results placed the club 22nd out of 94 clubs in the race for the Victor Ludorum trophy.

“Leander Club won and they’re the best of the British national squad and the world’s most successful single sports club in terms of Olympic medals,” added Sinnott.

“So it’s quite an achievement and a good indication.”
